Lydia took up the drums at age 8 in her home county of Shropshire. At the age of 18 she moved to Birmingham to study a jazz degree at Birmingham Conservatoire under the guidance of first Study tutors Jeff Williams, the late Tony Levin, Paul Clarvis and Andrew Bain. She graduated in 2010 and now splits her time between teaching and playing.
She has played in many different contexts- from orchestras, big bands, rock bands, klezmer groups and latin bands to jazz laptop ensembles and experimental folk groups. Currently Lydia primarily performs in Birmingham Based Folk/Rock outfit Boat to Row but can also been seen leading her own jazz quartet and playing as a sidewoman with many different acts. Over the years she has enjoyed playing with John Southworth, Gren Bartley, the TG Collective, Kate Doubleday, The Bonfire Radicals, Ben Thomas, Steve Tromans, Jipsy, Macamu, Gary Grace, Lady Be Good and many others…
She has been fortunate to be able to tour across the uk and Europe on numerous occasions and has played at many Major UK festivals like Glastonbury and Cambridge Folk. She has also performed live on BBC 6 Music, BBC WM, BBC Radio Shropshire and Radio Bremen (Germany).
Lydia currently teaches at Wolverhampton Grammar School, Adams Grammar School and Birmingham Conservatoire. She also teaches privately but on a highly selective basis.
